SISTERS RETIRE FROM OUR LADY OF SORROWS PARISH

Recently, the Our Lady of Sorrows parish community in Jersey City gathered to bid farewell to Sisters Alice McCoy, Elise Redmerski, Carol Van Billiard, and Luke Dworschak. Bishop Gregory Studerus was joined by the parish’s pastor, Reverend Esterminio Chica, and five other priests in concelebrating Mass for the English- and Spanish-speaking communities. A reception at the Cinelli Center followed the liturgy. On display were four handmade quilts and pillows—gifts to the retirees—and a plaque, which will be displayed in Our Lady of Sorrows Church. The quilts were unique in that the fabrics chosen reflected each sister’s personality: dogs for Sister Alice, cats for Sister Carol, butterflies for Sister Elise, and clowns for Sister Luke. Parishioners had written special messages of love and support on the quilt blocks. So many, young and old, who had worked with or worshiped with our OLS sisters came to express their good wishes, some from as far as Georgia and Tennessee! Below are some pictures from the event.
