Sister Patricia Mahoney, OP (formerly Sister Mary William), a Dominican Sister of Caldwell for 65 years, was a woman of deep faith, kind, reliable, welcoming to all and proud of her Irish ancestry.

Sister Pat entered the Sisters of Saint Dominic on September 8, 1957, received the habit on June 7, 1958, made first profession on June 13, 1959 and final profession on June 13, 1965. Sister Pat entered eternal life on February 10, 2022.

Sister Pat’s many gifts and talents, which she shared unselfishly, enabled her to serve in a variety of ministries over the years. She touched and assisted so many, particularly through her role in counseling. God gifted her with a listening heart. Her reverence for life, respect of culture and her compassionate nature served her well whether in a teaching role, in leadership, missionary service, or pastoral care to the sick.

In 2006, Sister Pat was honored with the Mount Saint Dominic Academy Hall of Fame Award. This description in her biographical profile describes her perfectly: “Sister Pat is the voice of calm and reason. She exudes gentle grace, a sharp Irish wit and a sincere interest in your well-being.”

A sports enthusiast, Sister Pat’s favorite baseball team was the New York Mets. At various get-togethers with family and friends, she enjoyed discussing the steps necessary to make the Mets a winning team!

Sister Pat’s life tells and reflects God’s story. We remember her faithful, loving relationships and her sense of communion, beginning with her family and as a Dominican Sister. Her life’s story can be entitled “The Great Adventure Well Lived” with the final chapters written as a mystery of suffering. Through the living of her story, Sister Pat became the best version of herself. And we know that all good stories end with “they lived happily ever after.” And Sister Pat’s life story ends with Pat living happily ever after in the loving embrace of God’s arms. And as we think of her sitting in the presence of God, we say her favorite Irish prayer:

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And may the rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
