Celebrating 75 years as a Caldwell Dominican Sister, Sister Mary John Kearney, OP, has had a lasting impact in the fields of education and leadership. After entering the community on September 8, 1949, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in social studies with a minor in elementary education from Caldwell University. She went on to complete a Master of Arts in elementary education and guidance from Catholic University, followed by an Ed.M. in curriculum and instruction from Columbia University’s Teachers College.
Sister Mary John’s early ministry as an educator included ten years of teaching at St. Mary School in Rutherford and four years at Lacordaire Academy in Upper Montclair. She then became principal at St. Cassian School in Upper Montclair, at Lacordaire Academy, and at St. Philomena School in Livingston, where her leadership shaped both the academic and spiritual development of students and staff.
Her main service, however, was at Caldwell College (now Caldwell University), where she held several pivotal roles. She served as chair of the Education Department for twelve years, associate professor for seventeen years, and supervisor in the Education Department for seven years. During her tenure, Sister Mary John shaped the next generation of educators, guiding them through field experiences and certification processes while also contributing to the development of the institution’s academic programs.
Through her tireless dedication to fostering excellence in education, Sister Mary John’s legacy is one of transformative leadership, academic growth, and unwavering service to her community. Her contributions reflect the enduring spirit and mission of the Caldwell Dominican Sisters.
