Celebrating 65 years of service with the Caldwell Dominicans, Sister Eleanor Uhl’s ministry has been marked by an unwavering commitment to education and pastoral care. After entering the congregation on September 8, 1959, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in elementary education from Caldwell University, followed by a master’s degree in education and reading from Seton Hall University.
Sister Eleanor’s early teaching years were spent at St. Mary School in Rahway, NJ, where she taught for ten years. Her ministry also took her to St. Catherine School in Mobile, AL, and later to St. Ann School in Newark, NJ, where she served both as teacher and principal over the course of several years. Her leadership abilities were further demonstrated at St. Francis de Sales School in Abaco, Bahamas, where she was both a teacher and principal, bringing stability and a deep sense of mission to the school.
At St. Mary School in Jersey City, she served as principal for eight years, offering guidance and support to staff, students, and families. Her commitment to education extended into various community roles, including being part of the administrative team at Resurrection Parish in Jersey City for thirteen years, as a teacher at St. Joseph School in Jersey City, and as a teacher and director of peace education at Our Lady Help of Christians School in East Orange.
In addition to her extensive work in education, Sister Eleanor has devoted significant time to pastoral ministry. Since 2016, she has been an integral part of St. Aloysius Parish in Caldwell, where she has served as a pastoral care minister, providing homebound visitation, facilitating green ministry, and supporting family faith formation.
Sister Eleanor's enduring presence in both educational and pastoral settings continues to enrich the lives of those she serves, leaving a lasting legacy of compassion and commitment.
