The three sisters selected for special remembrance during the month of November were expert educators who spent their entire years of ministry in the field of Catholic education.
Sister Joan Marie Sheehan was born May 21, 1938 in Jersey City to her parents John and Bridget Sheehan. A graduate of St. Dominic Academy, Joan Marie joined the Sisters of St. Dominic in Caldwell on September 9, 1959 and was professed in 1961. With a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Education from Caldwell College, Sister Joan Marie remained dedicated to the importance of early childhood education throughout her teaching ministry. She studied at Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama, Antioch College in New Hampshire and earned a Master”s Degree in the Science of Education from Bank Street College of Education in New York City. Many schools benefited from her efforts, including St. Catherine’s School in Cedar Grove where she was greatly beloved. Sister Joan Marie died quite suddenly in her sleep on November, 2008 and is buried in Gethsemane Cemetery in Caldwell.
