On Sunday, October 2nd, the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Caldwell had the pleasure of welcoming four new associates of the congregation. Margaret Becker, Tawana Clarrett, Damaris Herrera, and Judith Shipitofsky each committed to continuing the Dominican mission and charism, and their journey to become associates has been their response to a call by God.
As part of the reception, Sister Honora Werner reflected on how Dominican preachers are “commissioned to bring good news to those faced with…mountains of pain-inducing evils” and that we need to “occupy our pulpits daily.” “Our pulpits,” she said, “may be our apartment complex, the supermarket, Kohl’s or Macy’s, a family gathering, a wedding or a funeral, [and] as preachers, our presence, our actions, even our silences at times occupy our pulpits and proclaim the Gospel.”
The associate candidates were asked if they would continue to strive to be contemplative, promote justice, keep the sacredness of all creation, and identify themselves as Dominican associates in their homes, workplaces, parishes and communities. They were also asked to be willing to use their gifts and talents to support the Caldwell Dominicans in achieving the community’s evolving vision.
After the new associates signed their agreements and received their pins and certificates, they stood before those assembled to have their mentors place shawls on their shoulders and receive blessings. Together they recited the commitment pledge and received a Dominican blessing from all present.
Associate Director Kaitlyn Tashjian then led all other associates present in a recommitment ceremony of their own, and Sister Marge Jaros closed the event with a prayer, asking all to “go forth from this place strengthened by our companionship and renewed in our desire to serve God’s people.”
Welcome, Margaret, Tawana, Damaris and Judith!
