Sister Mary Stella Potvin passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 9 at St. Catherine Convent and Healthcare Facility after a prolonged illness.   A native of Methuen, Massachusetts, Sister Stella entered the Caldwell Dominicans in February, 1952. After obtaining her degree in English from Caldwell College, Sister continued her studies at Washington Theological Union in Maryland, where she obtained a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry in 1978.

Sister committed herself energetically to her teaching ministry in the parish schools of the Archdiocese of Newark and the Diocese of Paterson, as well as in Bayou la Batre, Alabama. Her years in pastoral ministry began in 1978 when she served in St. Mary’s, Rahway, St. John’s, Clark, St. Catherine’s, Glen Rock, and St. Mary’s in Colt’s Neck. She also served the aging population through her presence as Assistant Director of the Adult Day Care Center and then as Director of Social Services at Marian Manor, both in Caldwell.

Perhaps the first Sister to introduce the gift of liturgical dance at Caldwell,  Sister Stella was also gifted with musical, artistic and writing talents which she shared quietly for the pleasure of others and as an expression of her own contemplative nature. Her warm smile and gracious New England demeanor will be missed by many.
