Sister Mary Kathleen Malarky, O.P. died peacefully on Saturday, March 3 at St. Catherine Healthcare Center in Caldwell at the venerable age of 90. Sister was born  in Stratford, CT. She entered the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell in 1941 and last year celebrated her seventieth anniversary as a religious.

Sister Mary Kathleen was a graduate of Mount St. Dominic Academy, Caldwell, and held a Bachelor’s degree from Caldwell College. An expert in early childhood education, Sister taught at St. John’s School, Jersey City; St. John the Apostle School, Clark; Blessed Sacrament School, Bridgeport; St. Elizabeth School, Linden; and Sacred Heart School, Lyndhurst.

From 1968 to 1974, Sister served as Principal  and Superior at Blessed Sacrament, Bridgeport. In 1983 she assumed the Directorship of the Small Blessings Day Care Program at Sacred Heart in Lyndhurst, retiring from there in 2003. Compassionate and cheerful by nature, Sister Mary Kathleen never missed an opportunity for service to those in need both in her various teaching assignments and in her years of retirement.

Sister Mary Kathleen is the sister of the late James Malarky and is survived by her nephew, Timothy Malarky, her niece, Noreen Malarky, and her cousin, Jacqueline Young. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine Convent, 7 Ryerson Avenue, Caldwell.
