Sister James Marie Hannon, OP

Sister James Marie Hannon, OP died quietly on the morning of Friday, May 25 at St. Catherine Healthcare Center in Caldwell. Born in Newark, NJ,, Sister entered the Dominican Sisters of Caldwell on February 2, 1943. A graduate of Caldwell College with a B.A. in education, she spent most of her years in the ministry of Catholic education, including service at St. John’s, Jersey City, St. Theresa’s, Kenilworth, St. Philip’s in Clifton, and St. Catherine, Cedar Grove, where she later served as pastoral associate. She also held the position of principal and superior at St. Elizabeth School in Linden and as building manager at Mother Joseph Residence on the campus of Caldwell College.

After her official retirement, Sister served for many years in the pastoral department at Mountainside Hospital. She brought special skill and caring to her efforts at fundraising in behalf of the retired sisters at St. Catherine’s Convent, particularly in her role as Gift Shop manager and at the annual Crafts Fair at Caldwell College, where she and a loyal band of volunteers maintained a table for the sale of “recyclable treasures.”

Sister is survived by her brother, Paul Hannon, and her nephew, Edward Hannon. The Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine Convent on the Motherhouse grounds, Caldwell.
