SISTER GEORGINE MARIE CONRAD, OP
On January 21 Sister Georgine Marie Conrad, beloved sister and long-time nurse at St. Catherine’s Convent and Healthcare Center, died peacefully at St. Catherine’s after a short illness. Sister Georgine Marie moved to St. Catherine’s as part of the original nursing team when the building first opened in 1962. She held the position of head nurse at St. Catherine’s from 1969 to 1987.
A graduate of Caldwell College and St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing, Sister lived a generous life of gentle service both in the classroom (including parish schools in Union City, Bridgeport, and Morris Plains) and at the Motherhouse Infirmary before moving with her patients into the “new” St. Catherine Convent and Healthcare Facility, which opened in 1962.
Her primary focus on patient care combined her own deep spirituality with a gentle, patient-centered re-assurance. Even after her retirement several years ago, Sister was fondly remembered and often visited by her sisters and former patients. On December 8, 2012, she had celebrated the 70th anniversary of her entrance into the Caldwell Dominicans. She is survived by her twin brother, George Conrad. Her prayerful presence at St. Catherine’s will be greatly missed.
