Sister Bernadette Michael Makely, OP, was a prayerful and kind woman who served God and her Congregation faithfully. A dedicated teacher, she was always interested in the welfare of her students. Sister Bernadette Michael taught mostly junior high but dabbled in the elementary level for twenty-one years. Besides teaching, she had a deep love for reading and pursued further studies so she could be a school librarian. She ministered as a librarian for almost thirty years.

When her mother became frail, Sister Bernadette Michael returned to teaching so she could be near her mother and assist her on weekends. Her last active ministry was teaching mathematics to gifted students.

Sister spent the first few years of her retirement in Jersey City and then moved to Florida and resided with her good friend, Sister Barbara Duffy, OP. They assisted the priests in their local parish serving in many capacities. When she could no longer visit the local library, she learned to access e-books on her laptop.

Sister Bernadette Michael spent her final years in Saint Catherine Convent and Healthcare Center. She was loved by her sisters in community and her nieces and nephews. Sister Bernadette Michael is probably running the library in heaven and catching up on reading the books she never got to read on earth. Blessings, Sister Bernadette Michael.
