After her lifelong commitment to Catholic education and a few quiet years of retirement, Sister Anne Francis went to the Lord on Sunday evening, November 10. Her wake service is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12 from 2 to 7 pm, with Office for the Dead set for 4 pm. The Mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday, November 13 at 10:30 am. All services will be in Saint Catherine’s Convent and Healthcare Center in Caldwell where Sister had resided for the past five years.

Sister Anne Francis entered the Caldwell Dominicans on February 2, 1939. She received her B.A. in English from Caldwell College and her M.A. in Library Science from Villanova University. She began her teaching career at the elementary school level, teaching at St. John’s, Jersey City and St. Mary’s, Rutherford, with subsequent assignments in St. Joseph’s, Union City and Mt. Carmel School in Boonton.  At the secondary level, Sister served as principal of Saint Dominic Academy, Jersey City and Mount St. Dominic Academy in Caldwell, and as Vice Principal at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood. While serving the Caldwell College community as religious Superior, Sister enjoyed creating beautiful space for the rose trellises, which continued to flourish for many years.  Before fully retiring, Sister resided at Mt. Virgin Convent in Garfield as well as in St. Mary’s Parish in Dumont, where she assisted part-time in the Principal’s office.

Throughout her Dominican life, Sister Anne Francis maintained a welcoming presence and a joyful, quiet dignity. She will be warmly remembered not only by her sisters at St. Catherine’s but by many students and parents who were the beneficiaries of her quiet kindness over the years.
