Sister Agnes Bernard Duggan, OP

Sister Agnes Bernard Duggan, OP

Sister Agnes Bernard shared her deep spirituality and intensely creative energies throughout her Dominican life of more than 70 years. A cheerful teacher in the parish schools, Sister directed her graduate studies in educational psychology to the teaching of teachers at Caldwell University and, for many years, at St. Thomas More parish in Fairfield where she used video technology and other modern methods to prepare catechists for the parish ministry.

Elected to the Dominican Leadership team during the challenging years following Vatican Council II, Sister Agnes and a few other religious leaders designed an intercommunity religious formation program of theological studies which came to be known as IRFBTS. The program drew outstanding theologians from around the country to instruct the newest candidates for religious life.

It was during her years at St. Thomas More that Sister Agnes instructed a core of teenage students to develop and produce a weekly cable show of interest to young people. The program aired on Comcast cablevision.  This program evolved into “A Dominican Way,” which continues to be aired todays as a Sunday morning broadcast. Sister came to St. Catherine’s Convent in 2008 and remained active producing tv programs with the help of many volunteers. She died peacefully there on August 1, having served the Church and its people with creative energy for nearly 75 years.
