The DASS (Dominican Association of Secondary Schools) Convocation 2019, “Vision 2020: Futuring the Charism,” was held November 3-5, 2019, at Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights, Illinois. Approximately 72 campus ministers, mission designees, academic faculty and administrators from across the country attended. Our representatives were Kaitlyn Tashjian (Lacordaire Academy), Mahalia Armea (St. Dominic Academy), Guen Farrales (St. Dominic Academy), Ana Serra-Prescott (Mount St. Dominic Academy), Sr. Fran Sullivan (Mount Saint Dominic Academy), and Sr. Pat Tavis.
According to DASS, the organization “focuses on extending the Dominican charism through collaboration with school leaders and their communities. We partner in ministry to ensure the Catholic integrity and Dominican identity in our schools and to support the leadership necessary for their ongoing vitality and growth” (DASS brochure, 2019).
Andrea Wirgau (Executive Director) and Sr. Carolyn McCormack (President) spoke about the “Power and Purpose of DASS.” Sr. Collen Mary Mallon, OP, PHD, the keynote speaker and faculty member at the Aquinas Institute of Theology, gave an inspiring presentation, the “Futuristic Focus on Mission.” Breakout sessions included: “Call to Action,” “Life, Spirit and Mission of St. Dominic,” “Call to Preach,” “Catholic Values Investing,” and a panel discussion entitled “Modernizing the Curriculum.”
As Dominican educators, we joined together in reaffirming our commitment to strengthen and support Catholic Dominican education.
