Students and faculty members from Saint Dominic Academy, Lacordaire Academy, and Mount Saint Dominic Academy visited the Motherhouse on March 9th to learn more about our sisters as part of Catholic Sisters Week 2023, the theme of which is “Celebrating Traditions, Changing the World.”
In preparation for the gathering, students conversed with sisters to learn about traditions at the academies from when the sisters were either students or faculty members themselves. After Thursday’s opening prayer, the young ladies shared what they had learned about the sisters through video and oral presentations. Sisters in attendance at the event also shared their own stories as part of the open discussion.
Since changing the world for the better is part of the mission of our congregation and our academies, students and sisters then separated into groups for three service projects. One group made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need while another group put together snack bags for the homeless. A third group crafted ‘thank you’ cards for our sisters.
After delivering ice cream treats to the sisters at Saint Catherine’s Convent and Healthcare Center just in time for lunch, participants sat down to share more stories over Jersey Mike’s sandwiches and homemade cake.
The young ladies enjoyed meeting students from the other schools and hearing about the schools' similarities and differences, comparing senior sweaters, ring ceremonies and the like. When asked how they might carry on the sisters' legacy, one student commented that she did not know that "the Dominican sisters have many different, unique stories, and they don't all do the exact same thing and the exact same services. I can carry on the sisters' legacy by sharing the stories and carrying out the traditions and really keeping the Dominican spirit alive for generations to come." Another said, "We can carry on the sisters' legacy by continuing to complete service and sharing Dominican values."
